Lesson Eight: “Break”

Have you ever been so tired that even your dreams needed a break? So tired that hiding away from homework, chores, and even fun sounded like paradise? That’s how King Mateo felt today... Let's find out why.

King Mateo staggered from the garden into the candlelit library and collapsed. Sharp, teasing laughter pursued him as he burrowed further into the soft folds of his favorite chair.

"I can't believe they still have the energy to play. I, on the other hand, may never leave this room again," he sighed, turning to face his brother Korben. "Navigating the Dark Realm was like moving through a black hole, terrifying and exciting all at once! But it was worth it to bring back the Knights. What am I saying?? If it weren’t for them, we probably still be there, lost in the darkness. They brought us home!"

"Sounds intense," said Korben, leaning against a bookshelf.

"It was! Now all I want to do is sleep, but everyone expects me to prep the next rescue mission. I mean, of course, I want to locate the rest of my friends, but it’s all so overwhelming. The Long Break, the missing animals, rescue missions… I'm not sure I can continue," Mateo finished with a deep sigh.

Korben felt his brothers' distress building. "Matti, remember when Mumsy and Papá put us in charge? What’d they tell us?”

"They told us that being King is a big job, with lots of responsibility. They said it would be difficult at times, but that if we worked hard and respected others, we wouldn't lose our way. Oh, and they also told us to rely on one another. Because together, we make a good team.”

"And they were right. About everything. Up until I was sent to Italy. And you, you stayed here to guide the kingdom through the Long Break. It's no wonder you’re tired. But I'm here now and it's okay to take a break. Caring for yourself doesn't make you a bad King. In fact, your actions prove just the opposite. You’re one of the kindest, most generous people I know. And your greatest strength, your superpower, is in how deeply you care for others. But even the strongest of powers need a bit of rest and reflection."

"What do you mean?"

"Well, that sometimes, if we do too much, we tire out. And maybe we get a bit cranky and overwhelmed,” said Korben with a knowing smirk. “That's just our superpower telling us it needs to recharge. For instance, what do we do if we feel thirsty, hungry, tired? What do we do? Why, we eat, drink, or take a nap."

King Mateo nodded his head as he sank deeper into the cushions. His brow furrowed, not just from exhaustion but from something heavier.

"But what if what I really need is help?" gulped King Mateo nervously.

"Then we ask for help. Just think of all the people who might like to help you! Because, remember, being a good friend means we're there for our friends, through thick and thin."

"But sometimes it's hard to ask for help. And even harder to accept it." said King Mateo.

"That's true. But it doesn't mean that it's not worth it. After all, that's how we recharge our superpowers, by letting others help us when we need it." Korben patted his brother's arm.

"You know… you’re right. I have to make sure I’m okay before I can be of help to others. So, I’ll help prepare for the next mission after I’ve rested and recovered from this one. Hey, Korben. Thanks. We do make a good team."

"You bet we do. Now, I'll go ask Wilbur's wife, Anita, to make you her specialty, a Mexican Hot Chocolate. That always helps you relax. Oh, I just thought of something else. What if tomorrow, we threw a Preparedness Party? We'll invite everyone to help plan our next rescue mission! I bet they have great ideas and it would take some of the pressure off you," said Korben with a smile.

"That's a great idea!” said King Mateo. "And speaking of superpowers, I think I might be able to help the Knights focus on theirs. I've never seen a group so good at sneak attacks," he laughed. "It's incredible to watch them dance in an L shapes and then see how they use their strong legs to leap over obstacles. It's a challenge to keep track of them!"

"Oh good, so I'm not the only one who found it difficult to predict their next moves. They're a tricky bunch,” said Korben. "And I noticed something else Matti. 'Knights on the rim are grim'—meaning, they're the most effective when they play in the center of our garden board. It really is a sight to see!"

"Now if only we can convince them to stay and help us. We’d be an even stronger team," remarked King Mateo.

"That's true, but as you said before, it's their choice. Though they come from a long line of Royal Knights, they shouldn't be forced into service. Let's give them some time."

"Astute and observant as always Korben. See, even when you don't think you're helping, you're helping. Now, let's go get that hot chocolate."

And so, with a belly full of hot chocolate and a lighter heart, King Mateo drifted to sleep, dreaming of what tomorrow might bring.

Another night ends and a new day begins.

King Mateo's toes began to wiggle and soon his eyes settled on his bedside clock. "It's almost noon! My superpowers feel recharged. Let's see, am I hungry, thirsty, or tired? Definitely not tired, but hungry and thirsty, absolutely! I better hurry if I want to make brunch with the team. I can't wait to see what they cooked up at the Preparedness Party!"

King Mateo leapt to his feet, bouncing with excitement across the castle’s bustling courtyard.

Harry’s black and white spots suddenly appeared in the doorway of the garden entrance. “King Mateo, King Mateo!! You have to come see this... the Knights invented a super fun game. And they taught us how to play! Which was probably a mistake because we discovered their weakness," giggled Harry. "Come, come, watch us play the Knight's Tour!"

Would you like to see what they're up to?

Because the Knight’s Tour is just getting started...
