Story + Demo Board Exercises & Puzzles:
Story: We meet the Bull Rooks and learn to find chess addresses
Demo board: Demonstrate how the Rooks move, block, and capture. Show how to find addresses on the board. Now find the fastest (and safest) route to the your destination (Play “How Many Moves Does It Take”).
Game Instructions:

Game Objective/How to Win:
Capture a King (first) to win! If no King is captured, then the team with the most captured pieces, wins.
Practical Skills learned:
How to move, block, and capture with the Rooks. Understand, use, and find chess addresses. Learn to find ‘shortcuts’/the fastest way to arrive at a specific address/square.
Emotional Skills Learned:
Self-Awareness, Spacial-Awareness, Altruism (defending teammates for the greater good), How to identify and rely on the right/safe people = good friends. (What are some markers of good friends?)
Daily Challenge:
Capture a King, OR, if no King is captured in a single game, then the most pieces captured wins. Keep track of your scores and add them up at the end of class. Top scorers win!
Review Questions for Lesson Four: (Suggestions)
How do the Bull Rooks move? Why can't they take sharp turns?
Do you remember how the Bulls located the treasure? How can you use chess addresses?
How did Sho react when Luca preferred getting cheesecake over playing a game? What does that teach us?
Why did Luca want cheesecake? IS there anything that helps you to feel better when you’re feeling down?
We learned that a group of small animals (ferrets) were bulling Luca, a big animal. Have you ever had to stand up to someone bigger than you? Or have you ever stood up to a bigger bully for a friend?
Bonus: How can we identify and rely on safe people?
Introduce Game:
Who is ready to play? It’s time to include our Bull Rooks!
Post Game Debrief:
Review how the game went, if there were any problems/successes. Give prizes/awards for challenges completed.
Piece Abbreviations
Kings = K, Puppy Pawns = P
Piece Values: (Not Yet Discussed)
K = Infinity
P’s = 1 point
Demo Board Setup and Explanations:
Board 1: Today we’ll practice moving our Bull Rooks around the chess board! And to do this, let’s play “Race, Force, Brake!”
Rule #1: We use chess codes (addresses) to locate the hidden treasure (pawns or bonus points). Where is D5? Which Bull Rook can capture or collect it?
Rule #2: Then we send the Bull Rooks to collect the treasure. Do you remember how they move? In straight lines, uptown/downtown, left to right. And they only move in one direction at a time or they fall over! See how many ‘Treasures’ you can collect! And let’s find the fastest way to the treasure! (Call out
Bonus: Call out chess addresses that have no visible piece on them. Can the students locate those ‘hidden’ pieces?
Board 2: Ask yourself, can the Rook capture/collect any pieces?
Which ones? And in how many moves?
Now, in your personal games, introduce the King to the board and try to capture him!
Personal games: Set up boards with Kings, Pawns, and Rooks on both sides. Capture/collect the King to win!
