Story + Demo Board Exercises & Puzzles:

Story: Losing stings - and Ari’s had enough of it. When a tough match leads to hurt feelings, King Mateo steps in with an unexpected idea: what if doing hard things is how we build real superpowers?

Demo board: Play the "How many moves?” Game to reinforce how the Bishop’s move, capture, and navigate shortcuts.

Game Instructions:

K, P’s, R’s, N’s, & B’s vs K, P’s, R’s, N’s, & B’s

Game Objective/How to Win:

Capture a King with a Bishop to win!

Practical Skills Learned:

How to effectively move and capture and use shortcuts, with the Bishops. How to “see” and use the Bishop’s force fields. How to acknowledge and work through their ‘weaknesses’. How to be a good sportsperson (shake hands win or lose). We revisited finger tents and how to count the ‘value’ of each piece.

Emotional Skills Learned:

How to deal with big emotions, especially when things aren’t going our way. (Try your best, Don’t give up, Show respect, Handle Mistakes with understanding and kindness, Be kind - to yourself and others. )How to breathe and count as coping mechanisms. Plus, we learn to lean into the hard stuff to super charge our brains and gain a new superpower.

Daily Challenge:

Capture at least 6pts with the B. Keep B’s in the game as long as possible (don’t let them get captured). Capture the King with a B!

Review Questions for Lesson Ten: (Suggestions)

  1. Why did Ari not want to shake Neema’s hand at the beginning of the story?

  2. What does shaking hands mean in chess?

  3. Why does doing difficult or annoying things, things we don’t want to do but we have to do, make our brains stronger?

  4. What did Ari do to show she was using her super-brain?

  5. What can you do if your emotions begin to override your super-brain?

  6. Who many points are these pieces “worth”? King, Pawn, Bishop, Knight, Rook?

  7. How can our strengths (like the B’s diagonal moves), sometime be a weakness?

  8. Bonus: Why is learning from a loss just as important as winning a game ?

Introduce Game:

Ok everyone, choose a partner. It’s time to play!

Post Game Debrief:

Review how the game went, if there were any problems/successes. Give prizes for challenges completed.

Piece Abbreviations

Kings = K, Puppy Pawns = P, Bull Rooks = R, Pony Boy Knights = N, Billy Goat Bishops = B

Piece Values: (See lesson 3 & 10)

K = Infinity

P’s = 1 pt each

R’s = 5 pts each

N’s = 3 pts each

B’s = 3 pts each

Demo Board Setup and Explanations:

Board 1: Today we’ll see how well we can many pieces we can capture!Let’s start on our starting. Positions!

And then let’s try “How Many Moves Does It Take?” Start with a Bishop. Now choose a another piece. How many moves would it take for piece A to reach piece B? How many moves to capture it?

Now, let’s try using those Bishops to capture as many pieces as possible, including the King!

Don’t forget to add up the total value of the pieces you’ve captured before reseting the board for your next game! Most points wins! (Unless someone was able to capture the King during the game.)

Board 2: Now we see our Bishop is in danger? Can you spot it? What square is she on? Does she have any backup? If she does that might make the danger think twice before capturing her! And if she’s captured, how can her team respond?
